• subjective confidence influences selective information processing in word learning. adults ignore disconfirming when their meaning is high. a mutual-exclusivity inferences. Learning often accompanied by sense of one’s knowledge, feeling knowing what you know and how well it. Subjective has been shown to guide learning other domains, but received little attention so far the literature. Across three experiments, we investigated whether having acquired process itself. First, show evidence for confirmation bias during cross-situational statistical task: Learners who are highly confident they more likely persist belief than learners not, even after observing objective belief. Second, that modulates inferential processes based on word, affecting over whole lexicon: hold high use make mutual exclusivity inferences about words. We conclude modulating both selection discuss implications these results models.

Retrieval Dynamics and Retention in Cross-Situational Statistical Word Learning
Previous research on cross-situational word learning has demonstrated that learners are able to reduce ambiguity in mapping words to referents by tracking co-occurrence probabilities across learning events. In the current experiments, we examined whether learners are able to retain mappings over time. The results revealed that learners are able to retain mappings for up to 1 week later. However...
متن کاملContext influences conscious appraisal of cross situational statistical learning
Previous research in cross-situational statistical learning has established that people can track statistical information across streams in order to map nonce words to their referent objects (Yu and Smith, 2007). Under some circumstances, learners are able to acquire multiple mappings for a single object (e.g., Yurovsky and Yu, 2008). Here we explore whether having a contextual cue associated w...
متن کاملStatistical Word Learning Based on Cross-Situational Observation
One way young children could learn words is by pairing spoken words with co-occurring possible referents in the extralinguistic environment, collecting multiple such pairs, and then figuring out the common elements by cross-situational observation. In this account, the word-to-world mapping problem might be solved by computing distributional statistics across words, across referents, and most i...
متن کاملStatistical Cross-Situational Learning to Build Word-to-World Mappings
There are an infinite number of possible word-to-world pairings in naturalistic learning environments. Previous proposals to solve this mapping problem focus on linguistic, social, representational constraints at a single moment. This paper investigates a cross-situational learning strategy based on computing distributional statistics across words, across referents, and most importantly across ...
متن کاملCross-situational word learning in aphasia.
Human learners can resolve referential ambiguity and discover the relationships between words and meanings through a cross-situational learning (CSL) strategy. Some people with aphasia (PWA) can learn word-referent pairings under referential uncertainty supported by online feedback. However, it remains unknown whether PWA can learn new words cross-situationally and if such learning ability is s...
